Pilotage services exist all over the world and are a set of professional activities that give assistance to ship captains. Pilots are required by force of the local peculiarities that make it more difficult for the ships to navigate safely. The work of the Pilots is aimed at guaranteeing the safety of navigation in port areas and inland waterways where the water traffic represents a hazard to vessels, crews, passengers and loads, or to the port installations and the environment. It also includes coordinating the use of tugboats and other auxiliary means for the work of pilotage. Pilotage operations are based essentially on sensorial information.
The Pilot needs to continuously collect, evaluate and integrate in real time the innumerous interactive variables that influence the behavior of a vessel during maneuvering.
After all, no current technology is capable of substituting the good, old human eye for the acquiring information, and thus having all the technological apparatus only as an additional support in those situations.
