Amazonas - The Great Amazon RiverPorts of the Eastern Amazon

Port of Belém

Location: On the right bank of the Guajará Bay, opposite Ilha das Onças (panther’s island), in the city of Belém, port of entry to the Amazon, capital of the State of Pará, corporate headquarters of UNIPILOt, approx. 120 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean.

Access:

By road – using Federal Highways BR-010 & BR-316 that reach Belém by coincidental routes.
By sea – through the Marajó Bay, its bar being demarcated by lighthouses on Tijoca Island and at Cape Maguari, with a width of 55 kilometers and minimum depth of 10.5 meters. By means of a navigable natural stretch approx. 110 kilometers long and width ranging from 3.2km to 15km and 9 meters deep, the entry into the Guajará Bay between Barra and Forte Islands at a 350-meter width and 10-meter depth. The entry channel stretches along some 4 kilometers with widths varying from 90 to 180 meters and minimum depth of 6 meters.

Port of Vila do Conde

Location: In the Municipality of Barcarena, Pará, on the right bank of the Pará River at a location called Ponta Grossa, at the confluence of the Amazon, Tocantins, Guamá and Capim Rivers. Albras (aluminum smelter) and Alunorte (alumina refinery) plants are located there, being the reason for the port.

Access:

By road – through State Highways PA-151 & PA-481. Or by mixed road-waterway with two ferries for the water portion.
By sea – entry is through the entrance into Marajó Bay with a 55-kilometer width and 10.5-meter depth at the Espadarte sand bank. Access to the channel is the same as the Port of Belém up to Mosqueiro Island. A total extension of 140 kilometers and widths of 3.2 to 18 kilometers and minimum depth of 9 meters.

Port of Santarém

Location: On the right bank of the Tapajós River, near its confluence with the Amazon River, at a location called Ponta da Caieira in the city of Santarém, Pará. It serves the municipalities of the middle Amazon and Trombetas and Tapajós River valleys. Links the port with the north of the State of Mato Grosso by means of Federal Highway BR-163 (Cuiabá-Santarém).

Access:

By road – by Federal Highway BR-163 (Cuiabá-Santarém), arriving at the port in the urban part of the city by Avenida Cuiabá.
By river – the Tapajós River forms a natural entry channel, starting at the confluence with the Amazon River up to the port’s wharf along a distance of 3.1 kilometers and width of 1.8 kilometers and depth of 15 meters.

Port of Macapá

Location: On the left bank of the Amazon River in the Santana Channel in front of Santana Island, located 18 kilometers from the city of Macapá. It serves the State of Amapá and the State of Pará municipalities of Afuá and Chaves, at the mouth of the Amazon River, to the northwest of Marajó Island.

Access:

By road – by State Highway AP-010, linking with the cities of Macapá and Mazagão and Federal Highway BR-210 meeting Federal Highway BR-156 near Macapá.
By sea – by the Amazon River, either by way of Barra Norte between the islands of Janaucu and Curuá, as well as by Barra Sul, near the islands of Marajó and Mexiana. Entry to the port is by the Santana natural channel, north branch of the Amazon River, with widths varying from 500 to 800 meters and minimum depth of 10 meters.
By river – through the Amazon River and its tributaries, mainly the Jari River.
