BARRA NORTE

Pilotage at Barra Norte is regularly serviced by UNIPILOT for a great number of ships; however, the use of a Pilot is not mandatory. UNIPILOT’S group of Pilots keeps permanently updated in the changes in markings and depth soundings for shipping safety. The Curuá Channel is considered as being an area of risk for navigators that do not have knowledge of the region. It undergoes alterations in its course and is affected by strong currents. The Maritime Authority established the following hold points to receive Pilots for ships requiring their services.

After a good amount of independent survey and studies, and concerned with growing ecological and environmental hazards, UNIPILOT shall offer to its customers a more feasible optional route for accessing the Curuá Channel. Pilot services shall be available at the following hold point:

These coordinates are 3 nautical miles from Buoys 1 and 2 of the Curuá Channel. The contact with pilot services can be made through a UNIPILOT advanced station at Vila Progresso, Amapá, where UNIPILOT shall provide all the support infrastructure required for Barra Norte.

SOUTH CHANNEL – ABADE

Another pioneer effort by UNIPILOT is the pilotage services provided for in the South Channel. For ships coming from southern Brazil or the Belém region that are going to the Amazon River, or also from the opposite direction, this new route can save up to 100 nautical miles when compared to Barra Norte. UNIPILOT already provides several shipowners with this service using qualified personnel to supply all the necessary information. The following Brazilian nautical charts are needed for navigating the South Channel: 204, 205, 230, 231, 232, 233, 241, 300 and 310. For this service, the Pilot boards on at Abade, Pará, at the following coordinates:

MOSQUEIRO, PARÁ

UNIPILOT also operates near the Port of Belém, Pará. For ships arriving from the ocean or leaving Belém heading for Breves (the region of the straits), the transfer of pilots is performed at a location that is 2.5 nautical miles at an azimuth bearing of 147º from the Chapéu Virado Lighthouse at the following coordinates.

TERMINALS OF THE STRAITS OF BREVES, PARÁ

There are four terminals in the region of Marajó Island (Straits), in Pará, namely: Robco, Madenorte (Marajó), Magebrás and Mainardi, all specialized in timber exports.

ROBCO

The Robco timber terminal, on the right bank of the Breves River, in the region of Marajó Island.

The pier is 50 meters in length and can accommodate ships up to 180 meters in length. Tugboat service is not available at the port. For getting to the pier from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 210, 300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306 and 4341.

MADENORTE, MARAJÓ ISLAND

The Madenorte timber terminal, on the left bank of the Breves River, in the Marajó Island region, in the State of Pará, is located at the following coordinates:

The Pier is 50 meters in length and can accommodate ships up to 180 meters in length. Tugboat service is not available at the port. For getting to the pier from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 210, 300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306 and 4341.

MAGEBRÁS

The Magebrás timber terminal is located at the coordinates given below, on the left bank of the Breves River, in the Marajó Island region in the State of Pará.

The pier is 30 meters in length and can accommodate ships up to 180 meters in length. Tugboat service is not available at the port. For getting to the pier from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 210, 300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306 and 4341.

MAINARDI

The Mainardi timber terminal is located at the coordinates given below, on the left bank of the Jaburu Channel (furo), in the Marajó Island region in the State of Pará.

The pier is 35 meters in length and can accommodate ships up to 171 meters in length. For ships that are longer than 160 meters, the maneuver has to be made with the help of a tugboat / towboat. For getting to the pier from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 210, 300, 302, 303, 304, 305, 306 and 4341.

PORTS OF AMAPÁ

Currently, there are two ports in the State of Amapá:

PORT OF SANTANA - PORTOBRÁS

The Port of Santana is located at the coordinates shown below on the left bank of the Amazon River. The port specializes in handling general cargoes; however, tugboat service is not available.

The wharf has an overall length of 330 meters, an older 200-meter-long section plus a new 130-meter-long section, and can handle ships up to 220 meters in length. For accessing this port from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206 and 210.

MMX TERMINAL

The MMX terminal is located at the coordinates given below, in the State of Amapá, on the left bank of the Amazon River. It is used for exporting manganese ore and as a terminal for petroleum products. No tugboat service is available.

The floating dock has an extension of 247 meters and can accommodate ships up to 225 meters in length. For accessing this terminal from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 206 and 210.

JARI RIVER TERMINALS, PARÁ

There are three terminals on the Jari River:

JARÍ CELULOSE PORT

The Jari Celulose Port is located at latitude 00° 56.0' S and longitude 052° 26.0' W, in the State of Pará, on the left bank of the Jari River. It operates with general cargoes, but without tugboat service at the port.

The wharf is 150 meter long and receives ships of up to 200 meters. For accessing this port from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 A/B 4201 A/B, 4202 A/B and 4203 A/B.

SAL PIER

The Sal Pier is located at coordinates latitude 00° 57.0' S and longitude 052° 26.0' W, in the State of Pará, on the right bank of the Jari River. It operates exclusively with chemical products for the paper pulp mill. No tugboat service is available.

The wharf is 130 meters in length for handling vessels up to 185 meters long. For accessing this terminal from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 A/B, 4201 A/B, 4202 A/B and 4203 A/B.

CADAM PORT

The Cadam Port is at latitude 00° 55.0' S and longitude 052° 26.0' W, in the State of Pará, on the right bank of the Jari River. Bauxite and kaolin clay are loaded for export and no tugboat service is available.

The wharf is 190 meters long and can service ships up to 200 meters long. For accessing this port from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 204, 210, 4101 A/B, 4201 A/B, 4202 A/B and 4203 A/B.

SANTARÉM, PARÁ

The Port of Santarém is located at 02° 25.0' S and longitude 054° 43.W, in the State of Pará, on the right bank of the Amazon River. The port handles general cargo and soy bean. No tugboat service is available.

The general cargo wharf is 200 meters long, and the soy bean wharf is 235 meters long. Ships up to 260 meters long can be moored. For accessing this terminal from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 A/B, 4102 A/B and 4103 A/B.

CARGILL PORT

The Cargill Port is located at latitude 02º 25.1' S and longitude 054º 43.0' W, in the State of Pará, on the right bank of the Amazon River. No tugboat service available.

For accessing this terminal from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 a/b, 4102 A/B and 4103 A/B.

PORTO TROMBETAS, PARÁ

Porto Trombetas is located at latitude 01° 28.0' S and longitude 056° 23.0' W, in the State of Pará, on the right bank of the Trombetas River. It is operated exclusively for exporting bauxite and is one of the most important ports in the State of Pará.

The pier is 100 meters long and can handle ships up to 260 meters long. Two tugboats are used for maneuvering.

For accessing this port from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 A/B, 4102 A/B, 4103 A/B, 4401 A/B and 4402 A/B.

PORT OF PARINTINS, AMAZONAS

The Port of Parintins is located at latitude 02° 38.0' S and longitude 056° 44.0' W, in the State of Amazonas, on the right bank of the Amazon River. The port operates general cargo and has a terminal for passenger ships. The floating dock is 70 meters long. Tugboat service is not available.

For accessing this terminal from Barra Norte, the following DHN nautical charts are required: 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 A/B, 4102 A/B, 4103 A/B, 4104 A/B and 4105 A/B.

ITACOATIARA, AMAZONAS

PORT OF ITACOATIARA

This port is at latitude 03º 09.0' S and longitude 058º 27.0' W in the State of Amazonas, on the left bank of the Amazon River. It operates with general cargoes; however, tugboat service is not available.

The floating dock is 70 meters long. The route from Barra Norte can be seen on DHN nautical charts 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 A/B, 4102 A/B, 4103 A/B, 4104 A/B, 4105 A/B and 4106 A/B.

HERMASA GRAIN TERMINAL

The Hermasa Grain Terminal is located at latitude 03º 08.0' S and longitude 058º 29.0' W, in the State of Amazonas, on the left bank of the Amazon River. It is an export port for soy bean.

The floating dock is 90 meters long and mooring is by means of 5 buoys with the help of at least two tugboats/pushers.

Access to this port is shown on DHN nautical charts 200, 201, 202, 203, 204, 205, 210, 4101 A/B, 4102 A/B, 4103 A/B, 4104 A/B, 4105 A/B and 4106 A/B.

HERMASA FERTILIZER TERMINAL

This terminal is located at latitude 03º 08.34' S and longitude 058º 27.82' W, in the State of Amazonas, on the left bank of the Amazon River. It operates incoming cargoes of fertilizers and bulk cargo.

The Hermasa Fertilizer Terminal consists of a 175-meter-long dock silo, which on the opposite side receives other vessels for loading and unloading. At least two tugs/pushers are required for berthing and undocking maneuvers.

ALCOA RIVER TERMINAL IN JURUTI, PARÁ

Located in the municipality of Juruti, in the Lower Amazon, on the right bank of the Amazon River, this terminal is being built by Alcoa – Juruti Mine. The initial estimate is for loading 50,000 tons of bauxite. The loading pier will be 225 meters long and 23 meters wide and have five independent dolphins for mooring, two dolphins for tying ropes and one walkway. The port went into operation in July of 2009 with an annual shipping capacity of 2.6 million tons of bauxite.
